| Physical Description | Commander Marius Ragel carries a grounded, steady presence that draws attention without demanding it. He has a strong, well-proportioned build. He is broad through the shoulders with a solid, athletic frame that suggests both physical discipline and endurance. His complexion skin tone is a deep warm brown, and his features are defined by a square jawline and a calm but focused expression that often appears mid-thought. His hair is kept closely cropped in a clean, practical style, paired with a neatly maintained facial hair that frames his face and adds to his mature, composed demeanor. His eyes are dark and intent, often scanning his surroundings with quiet scrutiny, giving the impression that he is always processing more than he says aloud. There’s a subtle intensity behind his gaze. It is measured, observant, and rarely at ease. Ragel’s posture is upright but relaxed, reflecting confidence without rigidity. He moves with deliberate control, conserving energy and avoiding unnecessary motion. While his uniform is always regulation when on duty, there are moments, particularly during long investigations where small signs of fatigue appear: a slight tension in his brow, or the stillness of someone listening for something just beyond perception. It isn't uncommon for him to push up his sleeves or loosed his uniform, or wear a jacket variant instead. |
Family
Personality & Traits
| General Overview | Commander Marius Ragel is a practical man, instinct-driven, a problem solver who trusts only what he can observe, test, and touch. He's a career science officer at his core, but experiences that his family has had, peculiar instances that impacted his life have given him a deeper fascination with the things he cannot easily explain away. Marius operates with the mindset of someone who is quietly analytical, highly independent, and most comfortable when actively engaging with a problem rather than theorizing it from a distance. His silence is fragile though, often broken when necessary, but he is also known for being a bit of a tea kettle left on simmer too long. He is not one for long philosophical debates unless they directly impact the situation at hand; for Ragel, understanding comes through interaction, not speculation. There is a distinct edge to him. It stems from living so long in his sister's shadow and being on the sideline as her career was taken from him. Marius can be decisive, forward-moving, and unwilling to remain passive in the face of uncertainty. When a situation becomes dangerous or unclear, he does not freeze. He acts. This can make him seem blunt or even stubborn, particularly when others hesitate. However, his actions are rarely reckless; they are driven by sharp situational awareness and a strong internal compass that prioritizes protecting his crew above all else. When science is focused on studying strange forms of life, Marius is ready to terminate it if that life form becomes a threat. Ragel began his career with a peculiar mix of a firm skeptic that had odd past experiences, he wanted to be someone who rejected anything that couldn’t be explained within known scientific frameworks, but he knew what his sister went through and his own repeated exposure to anomalies has reshaped that perspective. He no longer dismisses the unknown. Instead, he approaches it cautiously, with a mindset that blends skepticism and reluctant acceptance. He doesn’t outright believe in the supernatural; he believes there are phenomena Starfleet doesn’t yet understand, and that distinction matters to him. He is emotionally contained, rarely expressive, but not entirely detached. Marius' concern for his crew is demonstrated through action, by being present in dangerous situations, taking the lead when the stakes are at their highest, and when making difficult calls that others might avoid. He never sought command for prestige. It was placed on his shoulders. Marius does not rely on charisma; instead, he earns trust through consistency and competence. |
| Personal History | Marius Elian Ragel was born in Tycho City on Luna to an average Federation family, but one rooted in Starfleet service. Marius, the younger brother of Sariel Ragel, always felt that he lived in the shadow of his sister, a Starfleet officer who served aboard the USS Enterprise. While his sister Sariel was an ensign serving aboard the Federation’s flagship, Marius was having the normal life of a child on Luna. He attended Tycho City Preparatory Academy and found himself a group of friends that stuck with him. He played sports as a teenager and dabbled in holophotography and journalism for the school paper. Darius admired his sister Sariel, looked up to her in many ways, but also felt he could never be seen the same way as she was by their parents. She served on the Enterprise and in their minds was destined to become Captain of her own starship one day. Marius wasn’t initially inclined towards Starfleet. He wanted to continue being a writer and was looking at attending a Federation University where he could major in journalism. His aspirations were to become a reporter for the Federation News Services or its top competitor, the Federation News Network. His life; however, would change when his sister’s was derailed. In 2369 while serving aboard the Enterprise-D, Sariel Rager was abducted by solanogen-based alien lifeforms who experimented on her and several members of the crew of the starship. Though the crew of the Enterprise were able to bring his sister back, Sariel was never the same. Sariel’s survival of that incident, and the lingering psychological effects that followed would leave an everlasting impression on Marius in his later teenage years. Although the details were never fully explained to him, the experience instilled a lasting awareness that the boundaries of known space concealed phenomena beyond Starfleet’s complete understanding, that there were things out there in deep space, in subspace, on distant worlds that needed to be studied and monitored. His sister would remain on the Enterprise-D and transferred to its successor, the Enterprise-E, but the brave and strong woman he once knew was a shell of the person she once was. A bright young officer on the rise to become Captain of her own ship became a ghostly fantasy rather than an obtainable reality. Sariel remained a fine officer, but she did not have the same ambition and struggled with nightmares for years after the incident. Through years of counseling and support, she did serve under Captain William T. Riker aboard the USS Titan and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Motivated by his sister’s trauma and early exposure to strange phenomena, Marius Ragel entered Starfleet Academy when he was of age with a focus on astrophysics and subspace theory. He later specialized in anomalous phenomena and neurocognitive effects associated with deep-space encounters. He was a science officer in the making that picked up some psychology courses along the way. His aptitude for identifying patterns within incomplete or contradictory data quickly distinguished him among his peers, earning him accelerated promotion through the science track. When he graduated Starfleet Academy and earned his commission, he was immediately assigned to the USS Heliacal, a Nova class Federation starship as a junior science officer. He served aboard the Heliacal for several years gaining experience and earning promoted to Lieutenant junior grade and Assistant Chief Science Officer before his transfer to the USS Sloane, Curiosity class starship. Aboard the Sloane, Marius quickly rooted himself in the science department as Assistant Chief Science Officer. He was promoted several years later to Lieutenant, took over as Chief Science Officer when his predecessor died in the line of duty. He underwent additional command courses at Starfleet Academy’s Command School preparing himself to become Second Officer of the Sloane. By 2395 Starfleet Command reassigned him to Deep Space 4 to assume the vacant position as Executive Officer of the Federation Space Station. Overseeing the Typhon Expanse, Lieutenant Commander Marius Rager racked up numerous strange experiences over the next few years. His logs were flagged by Starfleet’s Division 12 who were looking at putting together a specialized crew in 2397. Though not initially on a command trajectory, Ragel’s ability to balance scientific inquiry with operational discipline led to his selection as commanding officer of the USS Balam, a Diligent-class starship tasked with investigating high-risk anomalies. His appointment was less a matter of seniority than necessity. He was chosen for his capacity to confront phenomena that resist easy explanation, and for his understanding that such encounters affect not only ships and systems, but the minds of those who experience them. |
